Sales Revenue: Definition, Overview, & Examples

Sales returns occur when customers return defective, damaged, or otherwise undesirable products to the seller. Sales allowances occur when customers agree to keep such merchandise in return for a reduction in the selling price. Accrued revenue is the revenue earned by a company for the delivery of goods or services that have yet to be paid by the customer. In accrual accounting, revenue is reported at the time a sales transaction takes place and may not necessarily represent cash in hand. There are several components that reduce revenue reported on a company’s financial statements in accordance to accounting guidelines.

Recognizing Revenue: ASC 606

Late payments from customers are one of the top reasons why companies get into cash flow or liquidity problems.
